Gigafactory can produce batteries for 400,000-800,000 cars/year-CEZ
The planned electric car battery factory in Czechia, called gigafactory, might produce batteries with a capacity of over 30 gigawatt hours (GWh), which would be enough to charge 400,000 to 800,000 passenger cars a year, energy group CEZ spokeswoman Barbora Peterova announced..
It will depend on the technology battery producers will use and on the capacity of final batteries, Peterova said.
In the Cinovec lithium project, Geomet, a company majority owned by CEZ, plans to mine and process 34.5 million tonnes of lithium within 21 years from the start of the mining activity that is scheduled for 2025.
"So far we have not identified any major obstacles to (lithium) mining and processing ...," Peterova said.
CEZ is preparing a final techno-economic feasibility study that will provide answers to all important questions, she added.
A final decision should be made in 2023. The plant's construction will come next, with the launch of mining scheduled for 2025, said Peterova.
On Tuesday, Deputy Prime Minister Karel Havlicek and CEO of CEZ Daniel Benes signed a memorandum on support for the gigafactory project. Volkswagen (VW) and South Korea's LG have shown interest in the project, Havlicek said.
Most experts approached agreed that the planned e-car battery plant is almost essential for the country's car industry because of the market development and Europe's way to low-emission sources.
Jaromir Stary, head of the mineral information system department of the Czech Geological Survey, said that Czechia has 571.5 million tonnes of ore with 1.14 million tonnes of lithium.
The country now has about 2 percent of the world's lithium deposits, while the previous estimate was 3 percent, he said. "Global geological surveys continue, and sources grow," he explained. The largest amount of lithium is at Cinovec in Krusne hory (Ore Mountains) in northern Bohemia and a small deposit is in the Slavkovsky les protected landscape area in western Bohemia.
