Metrorex approved as an electricity supplier
The National Energy Regulator Agency (ANRE) has awarded the Underground Transport Administration - Metrorex – with a license to act as an electricity-supplier. According to information posted on the ANRE website, this measure will allow the company to purchase energy from the market on its own terms.
Metrorex will thus be able to buy energy from the Romanian power maker operator - OPCOM - and then sell the energy on to companies operating in the same sector as it does, including the Bucharest Public Transport Administration or the Romanian Railways Company (CFR).
There is a context for this ruling, of course. It could be advantageous for CFR to be purchasing its energy from a related company like Metrorex, as it’s well known to have incurred heavy penalties because late payment of its electricity bills. These have has amounted to approximately RON 900m.
